I read about the Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation holding "failure fest". At this time they consider investments they have made in projects that went "bust". The purpose is to learn from these, turn these failures into discovery opportunities as they move forward. The point is failure is opportunity to learn, improve and sometimes go in a whole new direction. It is ok to fail. If you accomplish anything in life you are certain to fail along the way. The way I see it God, Christ suffered failure, otherwise there would be no need for Christmas, Easter, Passover…..There are plenty of places I made mistakes and failures as husband, parent, preacher, human being. But I have a lot of company and Grace embraces us everyone……Bless you….

He is in Control
"He knows all, does all: He changes the seasons and guides history…." —Daniel 2:21 MSGThis thought is beyond my comprehension. In the setting of chaos, violence, fears, financial concerns, medical care insecurity….to say God is in control is laughable to some people. It is not my job to prove or disprove the validity of this scripture. I bear witness to it from the depths of my soul and from a level of understanding that establishes me in faith. Be confident, face forward, move on into …….God is with you.

SERVICE
The Word today is SERVICE Jesus said, "I came to serve and not to be served." (Matt. 20:28) A young man or woman standing at the entrance to Kroger singing and making beautiful music inviting us to drop some money in the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle. It is cold, and the hours are long, but they serve anyway. Our eyes open we see little moments of persons serving. In our busy going about we see someone with some need for a helping hand and we help as we move about doing our checklist.

Biscuits
A minister was attending a men's breakfast. He asked one of the old time farmers to say the prayer that morning.
The farmer began; "Lord I hate buttermilk." The pastor opened one eye and wondered where this was going.
The farmer continued, "And Lord I hate lard." Now the pastor was worried.
The farmer prayed on, "And you know Lord I don't care too much for raw flour."
The pastor was just about to stop everything when the farmer said;
"But Lord, when You mixiz'em all together and bakes 'em up; I love me some biscuits. So Lord, when we don't understand what is happening; when life gets hard; when things come up we don't like; whenever we just don't understand what You are telling us, then we need to just relax and wait 'till You are done fixing what You are fixing, and probably it will be something even better than biscuits."
Romans 8:28 says, "God works for the good of all those who love Him."

Love
faith, hope, love and the greatest of these is LOVE
While listening to the CNN Heroes program Sunday evening, I made notes of what I was hearing and they speak to where we are in the world.
LOVE HEALSLove is the most powerful force in the world.Find the work God wants you to do loving this world.Heroes all over the world are doing works of love helping people in every kind of need.Regular, everyday heroes engaged in healing love.We all have talent to do works of loveWith love and motivation you will succeed.
You do not need to be a "religious" person to do works of love. You do need to be a compassionate person and that comes from the heart.

Peace
The Word today is: PEACE
The "eye of the storm" is calm, quiet. Winds blow and uproot, but there is a place at the center that is calm.
"…my peace I give you…" (John 14:27) …eventually the storm passes and peace prevails….

Today's Word: FAITH
The word today is
faith
Levels of truth are not yet seen but experienced because our faith connects us with the One who comes in the birth of a little baby…..innocent, small, fragile, dependent, but indestructable. Not even the kings of that day could destroy him because God was his protection, caring for his need…..faith sees what is unseen, knows what is not known and keeps us on the path of truth and Eternal Purpose…….

Nature Embraces Injury
Much of life is lived in transitions. Often transitions happen in response to trama or unexpected life changes. How we respond makes all the difference in what is to come. “…while there’s always the option to quit and run, working your way through a tragedy can sometimes be the best way to move forward.” (Ted Turner,Call Me Ted)
It is helpful to note that Nature embraces injury and keeps on growing.

A Prayer for the President
A prayer for the President — Teach the President to judge with your righteousness, O God……May the land enjoy prosperity; may it experience righteousness. May the President judge the poor fairly; may he help the needy and defeat their oppressors. …..May your people worship you as long as the sun shines, as long as the moon gives light, for ages to come. (Psalms 72:1-5)
As we contemplate the birth of the baby Jesus it is well to pay attention to the reason he was born and take seriously God's saving plan rises above all.

Forgiveness
"If you forgive someone's sins, they're gone for good. If you don't forgive sins, what are you going to do with them?"John 20:22-23 MSGThis is the Word that spoke to me this morning. When someone says or does something against me or hurts me, if I forgive them, it's done and I turn my attention to other things, including building a better relationship with the one who offended me. But what got my attention are the next words. If I don't forgive the offense what am I going to do with it? My mind festers, my anger stirs, my imagination takes off in unhealthy directions and I evade that person. I am distracted from engaging my mind and being in positive, good, kind behavior. When around that person my face shows my bad attitude. What am I going to do with the trashy feelings in me??? I really need to mark it off and get on with matters of the present and be the wiser for having the experience.

Byways
> "Sometimes it's the byways that test you and make you what you're meant to be." Life doesn't happen in a straight line from start to finish. It zigs and zags and gets upside down and every which way around. In all this we are tested and find our way. There is the Spirit engaged in all that is happening, inspiring, encouraging, renewing us from inside out. In other words creation never ceases.

> Enjoy your byways too.

Vengeance Breeds Bitterness
"In the murder of my brother, I had to learn to respond to evil in positive and healthy ways,….Vengeance breeds bitterness and only love can smother and conquer hate…even in the midst of tragedy and evil, there is still God and God is still good." (Tyrone D. Gordon, Circuit Rider, March/April 2003)

Omelettes
> "You can't make an omelet without breaking eggs." (found in some of my reading) - For the last year and half we have had candidates for President of this country breaking eggs. Seems they have found every unkind word possible to break eggs on someone else. We are tired of this. Tomorrow we vote and finally know who will be the leader of our country the next four years. After tomorrow I hope and pray attention will turn to making omelets.

Good Citizen
"Be a good citizen. All governments are under God. Insofar as there is peace and order, it's God's order. So live responsibly as a citizen….." (Romans 13:1 MSG) — In the midst of our toxic political environment it is important that we keep our perspective healthy and on solid values and principles.

Moral Poverty
"Formerly the restraints of discipline were imposed from without. The child faced discipline by parents, discipline by teachers at school, and to a very considerable extent by law….the police officer was a foot soldier. He patrolled a beat, and he knew just about everyone who lived on that beat…" A young man going through hard times fell into criminal activity to meet his needs. Now in prison he said to the counselor, " …I wish that when I had been given an education, someone had put a little more emphasis on teaching me the difference between right and wrong….."
it is time we ceased to regard juvenile delinquency as a isolated phenomenon…it is a by product of our national way if life. …These are selections from a article written in 1957 regarding the growing moral poverty in America.
We are a liberated culture. The only thing that matters is do your own thing. But something needs to be said about our responsibility for doing our own thing impacting others in a harmful way. Individual freedom without a sense of social conscience is dangerous. Our best chance to make a better world is to be a better person. One whose person and life is spent doing good and encouraging others in the way of Christ.

The Right To Vote
>
> Whoever leads, whoever practices a skill, whoever parents, must be accountable to values, principles, purposes that are bigger than any one person or nation. In America our religious heritage has played a critical part in this. The truths taught in our Judaic/Christian story spawns the basis for planning how to be a person, a nation of justice, compassion, sacrifice, love. YES, LOVE ONE ANOTHER….

Be Still
> There are times when the only thing we can do is WAIT. It is wisdom to know when…."But those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength." (Isaiah 40: 31) We are so geared to action that we deem sitting, doing nothing as lazy. There is a time to wait and a time to act. The first step in taking action is to WAIT. Be still, quiet, listen, feel Presence…….

Can Do Thinking
>
> A large crowd of people followed Jesus to the mountain side. It was time to eat and no obvious food source was available. Thinking out loud Jesus said, "What can we do to feed all these people?"Phillip said, "There is not enough money to buy food for this many people. The implication is there is nothing we can do. Andrew spoke up and said,"well, there is a little boy here with five barley loaves and two fish." His mind set was to look at what they did have and start with that. ….one response was to name what they could not do thus discouraging any solution. The other response was to look at what they did have no matter how small. That mind set opened the door for Jesus to start meeting the need. …one said that we do not have enough money…the other said that we do have this food available…..maybe that is a faith statement that opened his mind to the miracle of God's response. I like the fish and bread way of responding…

I leave my thoughts
"Life's about morning walks and lengthy talks.
Smelling flowers, enjoying showers.
For writing books, exploring nooks.
I'll squander not my health for wealth.
For when I die, I'll call your bluff.
I'll leave my thoughts, instead of stuff."

Weeping Willow Tree
However the winds of a great storm will likely topple the strong oak because it lacks the flexibility to bend with the wind .
The weeping willow growing near by does not fall when the winds blow mightily. It is flexible and bends with the
wind.
The person whose strength is in the Lord suffers the storms and winds of life and is flexible enough to bend when
the stormy winds of life push every which way….and lives to tell the story.

George H.W. Bush grew up in a family in which service to other was a fundamental principle for daily life. Jesus Christ reminds us when he says, "I came to serve and not to be served.."

Foresight
FORESIGHT: "I skate where the puck is going to be, not where is has been" (Wayne Gretzky, hockey player) - "The status quo may be more or less resistant to change, but it will change." (John McCain, Hard Call) - A person needs to "wise up" and be open to change because it is a law of nature. The smart person sets out to understand what is going on and know what you can about your adversary(change). This sets the stage for intelligent thinking and action in the midst of change. Of course individual and collective prejudice will scream no. Push through it and get into creative, healthy change. In my imagination I hear God thinking, "let us continue the work of creation today in each person and all else…"

Forgiveness Makes Room for Beauty
The healing power of forgiveness….Every Thursday morning out street is lined with big trash cans waiting to be emptied when the garbage truck comes. This reminds me of our need to regularly empty the trash in our minds and hearts; otherwise it builds up and gets really rotten causing all kinds of emotional and spiritual and mental and physical disease. "…forgive us our sins as we forgive the sins of others against us…" these words are at the heart of The Lords Prayer. Forgiving makes inner space for beauty and kindness and love….to grow thus blessing others….this exercise keeps us healthy.

Doing Good Together in the Body of Christ
> "Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually." (1 Corinthians 12:27) - "But as for you….do not grow weary in doing good." (1Thessalonians 3:13) - In the first we hear the clear message that we are not in this alone. We are connected through our relationship with Christ. We are the continuation of His presence and work in the world, in each generation. In the second we hear that our work in this world is to do good wherever we are. This means we are never without a job. We can do good no matter our age or our state of health. Do not minimize you power to do good wherever you are. After two weeks of listening to political rhetoric I am keenly aware that the "body of Christ" people need to stay on the job and be alert to the need for doing good at all times….

It has been that way from the moment of my conception and even before that……there is no point or place in life where we can sit back and quit. It is imperative that I trust Author and Finisher of all creation. Then I don't quit but go with the flow/nature of creation. Fwd: thought
"….the place you are standing is holy ground." (Exodus 3:5) It was a ordinary day. Moses was doing his job tending his father-in-law's sheep. Suddenly he looks up and sees a bush burning yet it is not consumed by the fire. "what is going on here?" he says to himself. Moses walks toward the bush burning but not being burned up. There is a atmosphere that is strange, then he hears a voice: "stop where you are, take off your sandals, you are on holy ground." In this moment the Lord tells Moses he is concerned about his people living in slavery in Egypt. He wants Moses to go lead them to freedom. In this moment Moses becomes a changed person. The fire burns in his heart and consumes his mind. He has to obey this command, even though it scares him to death. There is a time to wander in the dessert and a time to leave and go into the world of suffering to heal and help.
I dare say everyone has those burning bush moments. It may be when you are young and it may be when you are old. God does not measure time as we do. He may call you as a young person to spend the rest of your life in his work.He may call you when you are nearing the end and in a short time do important work with you. There was a man 60 years old in seminary same time as me. In a few short years God would bless other through this man.
Be aware of the holy ground on which you stand at any moment. Listen…..

Who we are
"…for being an elder turns much more on who we are than what we say. It is a quality of presence, a grace and integrity shining through an older person, that most inspires others." (Weavings May/June/July 2016)
I understand the relevance of this as one lives into elder years of life; however I believe that from youth and all through life the most powerful influence one has is more in who he/she is than what they say.
So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart. (Psalm 90:12) -

wait
“Even in the most wrenching situations, we have to find ways to discern how God is leading us.”(Benjamin Brown, Friends Journal)- Disciples of Christ find that being centered in the Spirit does not make the way always clear and easy. Sometimes we wait in silence and darkness for a Word from the Lord and seems not to get a answer. “But those who hope/wait in the Lord will renew their strength.” (Is. 40:31) and this is TRUE.
hope
Lord, help me live this day in the experience that with you I can do more than I think I can. I also pray this for each person reading these words. Amen

Fwd: thought
"How else would things ever get straightened out if God didn't do the straightening?" (Romans 3:6 The Message) - our hope is in God involving Himself in our situations.
I have sought knowledge and understanding of biblical teachings. I am a faith person. Much learning has opened the world of my mind to wonderful truths in all creation. I am grateful for the light shining upon the path life for me.
However, at this place in life I am more aware of the basic truth. God is Love. God is Good. God came into this world in the person of Jesus Christ to redeem, save, convert the minds and hearts of people from sin, hatred, violence and every other evil into hearts of love, kindness, compassion, forgiveness. No fancy words. Simply "I need thee, I need thee every hour…"

"…but listening to what we already know to be true in our hearts and have refused to hear or have been afraid to follow…we renew our faith by trusting the innate compass that aligns us with a Higher Power and allows us to know without knowing." —Candace A. Croft. The Kingdom of God is within you—another way of saying is Conscience….the inner compass….Lord, you are a lamp to our feet and a light upon our path...

Oneness
> "You have one Master, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who rules over all, works through all, and is present in all. Everything you are and think and do is permeated with Oneness." (Ephesians 4:4-6) — Live or die I am part of Oneness. Succeed or fail I am part of Oneness. In sickness and wellness I am part of Oneness.
>
> Oneness has been given a face and becomes personal in Jesus Christ. Read his story, learn from his behavior….

God in the Heart
"…being closer to God is always more about the heart than the head" (Guideposts) - the heart has a higher level of intelligence than the head. the heart is the very soul of our being where we are in touch with Holy. out of the heart comes healing that brings wellness setting the head straight and on the right path of attitude, thought, behavior. ………"Create in me a clean heart oh God and put a new and right spirit in me." (Psalm 51:10)

Your Own Truth
>
> "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" Some say……"You are John the Baptist, others say you are Elijah…"but "What about you? Who do you say I am?" —— What do you think about who I am? - It is a lot easier to report what someone else is saying. To say what you really think about someone may not be so easy. This does not discount listening to opinion from others, but eventually you or I must claim what we really think. What is the echo of truth in your mind and heart? If we follow everyone else thought and opinion, we come up short and empty in our souls. We need to answer the call of truth from our own inner self…There are two parts to this teaching. The first is Jesus asking the disciples to check the resources of other thoughts and understanding. The second is Jesus calling on them to listen to their own awareness and understanding. Now, do the best YOU know…..

"Pride, insolence and wrong-doing will collapse of themselves, but humility and fear of God, decency and order, right and truth will endure — for God is 'God in heaven above and on earth beneath'." (Joshua 2:11) - The writer of these words is speaking in the context of suffering and murder of thousands of Jews in Germany. His words are grounded in the words of Joshua long ago as he spoke to the Jews of his day. Today in many places of the world people are suffering due to evil in the hearts and minds of persons who have power over them. — Whether we are part of a group or individual facing trouble it is well to pause with the words of Joshua, "God in heaven above and on earth beneath…" is so in the moment and throughout all history.

The Face
>
> "Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always." (Psalms 105:4)-"My heart says of you, 'Seek his face!' Your face, Lord, I will seek." (Psalms 27:8) - Jody called my attention to Psalms 105:4 and I cross referenced it to Psalms 27:8. The word "face" is significant. I have become more aware of faces. I see people on tv and try to read their faces. The face of a person reveals the person. The face lets you know if that person is really with you, really listening to you, really friending you. The face of God reveals the love, kindness, open heart of God. The face of God is the presence of God in your mind/heart. And no one can show the face of God like your face reveals your heart of kindness and love. The face shows pain, anger, sorrow, compassion, joy.

Focused on You Personally
> "Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?" (Job 31:4) This is specific, focused. God is paying attention to me, you. God is aware of us, each one. God is not just generally aware of us, but specifically. Therefore, whatever is happening with you or me at any moment Holy Spirit is with us specifically. Thanks be to God.

Easter 2016
> Whoever we are and whatever is going on in our lives sometime during this day we have been reminded that this is RESURRECTION DAY in the Christian heritage. The first thing seen on the TV is about boomings, insults candidates throw at one another and trouble of every kind all over creation. If one thinks about this one way he/she would likely conclude everything is going to hell therefore we had better take care of ourselves and just survive. On the other hand a person can think about all this from a faith point of view. There is One seeing the Big Picture, one who has allowed humanity to follow its own course while knowing all the time Creation, Resurrection, Redemption has the final word. We do the best we can under the circumstances of the moment and God have mercy on us….Resurrection bears that out…..so we keep on living and trust Loving Spirit. Thanks be to God.

Love Lifted Me
> "Love lifted me. When nothing else could help, love lifted me." - From early childhood going to Turkey Branch Methodist Church and through many years as pastor in small country churches in South Ga and North Ga Methodism "Love Lifted Me.." rang clear and strong. People sang from the heart. Some sang remembering how God's Love sustained them through many times of heartache and in times of celebrating life joys. This morning I sat at my dest and these words floated up out of my inner memory. Love lifted me felt warm, comforting, reassuring, like the breath of God upon the fire of life in me. I typed the words and the Bill Gaither choir sang this beautiful hymn and I felt the Presence of God embracing me.— Today, Lord, I ask that all who read these thoughts will feel Your lifting love all through their being... and thank You. Amen.

Come to Jesus
> It is time to have a "Come to Jesus" meeting. this is a saying I have heard over the years. It has to do with "getting our act together" or recognizing what is really important in life, time to put first things first. We all have need for this many times on the road of living. Every day starts with the feeling and awareness that I am accountable to God and the Will of God has been made clear in the life and person of Jesus Christ. When I put "all my beans in that basket" my life begins to come together around the solid core of truth and goodness and in faith and trust I move forward into whatever is yet to come….I need to stay close to this truth because I have made many mistakes and failed to live according the best I know many times, yet God is faithful and lets me start anew over and over and over…..

Preparing for Easter
> The days leading to the death and resurrection of Jesus are a time of reflection and self-awareness. We are burdened with feelings of guilt and failure in so much of life. None is immune to guilt, mistakes, bad choices, wrong attitudes and actions. This unhealthy stuff accumulates in our minds and hearts cluttering us with so much toxic feelings and memories. It is the love of God in Jesus Christ that comes to us in the Easter event to make a way for us to confess our guilt, failure, wrong and receive forgiveness and the renewing of our hearts and minds in what is good and true. "A total life-change through the forgiveness of sins…." is happening in us…….

What you are looking for is within you...
"Concentrate on your heart. That's the only happiness that lasts…..Go to that place of the heart where God is….When you find God within yourself, He'll tell you who you are and who you're meant to be." I read these words this morning in Daily Guideposts. They were spoken many years ago by a mother to her young daughter. The intent was to point her daughter in the right direction for finding that her true values in life are deeper that her pretty face and attractive body. — What you are looking for is within you….

Wait for the Lord
"Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord." (Psalms 27:14) = This is the Word I am listening to this day. Life has a mind of its own and we can react, resist, reject, complain or we can accept, trust, learn, respond, participate. In the latter we will be blessed with experience and fulfillment beyond measure. Life, world, you and me are all part of Creator's story. For best results wait, be strong, take heart. So whatever your agenda today, this week….wait-Lord-strong-heart.

Easter/Forgiveness
We are moving toward Easter. But before Easter Sunday morning comes the suffering and death of Jesus Christ.
Hatred, violence, pain, grief happens every day when someone is murdered, abused, neglected, insulted.
The death and resurrection of Christ says to us there is hope, forgiveness, starting new and forgiven living.
Every person needs the cleansing experience of forgiveness for our sin and conflict with God and each other.
"Make this your common practice: Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you can live
together whole and healed….." ( James 5:16-18 The Message)

Trust the Lord
>
> "I have no explanation. Some things just are." When I read these words this morning they stood up in my mind as full of meaning. It is in our nature to want answers for every situation. We do not like "I don't know" when the doctor cannot explain our illness. We expect God to answer our prayers and get upset when the answer is silence. Some things just are is reality in life. "Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding …." (Proverbs 3:5) Many times as I deal with some issue and am fearful these words come to the surface of my mind and point me in the right direction….Some things just are and God is with you in the anxiety of not knowing.

"…NEITHER DO I CONDEMN THEE: GO, AND SIN NO MORE." (John 8:11)
"Judgements drive a man into his faults more deeply, but acceptance releases him to gain victories over self."
"Our acceptance of persons helps set them free to become new persons in Christ"
These quotes came from THE UPPER ROOM devotional book Oct. 31, 1972. I saved these thoughtsbecause at that time they meant something important to me. I share them now because they still speakto our human need for embracing love just as we are and in this we find what we need to be the betterperson God intends us to be.
Our political and social environment is so toxic we need some anchor truth to keep our balance.
