It is pretty well known that we have two hemispheres of the brain. One side deals with logic and language and the other with images, shapes, art, and story. To be a whole person we need to let both sides of our brain work. Our imaginative capacities enable us to step out of the "facts of now" and into imagination of what might be. "Children offer the world a special blend of fantasy and reality……children remind us that our 'real' lives can be nurtured by our imaginations." It is a special gift of Creator that we have both reason and imagination. The heart of Advent/Christmas/Hanukkah calls for imagination. The "nuts and bolts" of God's coming into our lives and the world to deliver us and love us is not the important point. Imagine that we really are God's children and God comes into the crazy and messed up world to fill us with the Joy of Life…….

This is a antidote to what is wrong in human relationships. And there is another dimension to this scene. The guy doing his neighbor a good turn walks with a limp and one arm is held up close to his chest because a stroke has left him partially paralyzed. But his serving spirit is not paralyzed. "...the fruit of the Spirit is ..kindness..". It is also doing what you can with what you have.

"….HE WANTED ME TO BE WITH HIM UNHURRIEDLY AND GENTLY." This thought came from a caregiver as he reflected upon his relationship with a patient. However, it has implications for all relationships during a day. Many times we may be not present when we are present with another person. Our minds are working on the next thing…..I have a little thought I reflect on: "Be present to the present--be present to the Presence in the present." GOD WITH US is a fundamental concept of our understanding of God. And when God is with us, God is not thinking about the next thing,person on his to do list-God/Spirit is really 100% with us-you,me in this very moment….slow down, let yourself be aware of Presence in this present….

HENRI NOUWEN WAS THE PASTOR AND CAREGIVER TO A SEVERELY HANDICAPPED YOUNG MAN. IN HIS REFLECTIONS HE CAME TO A MOST LIBERATING INSIGHT TO CAREGIVING: "ONE OF THE GREAT RICHES OF CAREGIVING IS THAT IT EMBRACES SOMETHING MORE THAN SIMPLY A FOCUS ON CURE." IN OUR "FIX IT" CULTURE WE ARE IMPATIENT AND FRUSTRATED WHEN WE CAN'T FIX A SITUATION OR A PERSON. NOT EVERYTHING CAN BE FIXED. NOT EVERY ILLNESS DAN BE CURED. She was making a statement. She was not exactly a follow the crowd person. Well, the message in these ponderings is that life gets knocked off course, off center, cocked sideways but we do not stop living. In fact it is just ok to be a little odd in the eyes of the world, and the Grace of God loves us and works with us just as we are,- not hanging exactly perfect on the wall of life…..

"Are we ready to stop projecting our lack of fulfillment onto other people and take our lives into our own hands?" I remember the story of Moses when God was laying on his heart to go lead the people out of slavery in Egypt. Moses kept saying how helpless he was and God said, "What is that stick in your hands? Throw it on the ground…" And when he did so the stick became a serpent. The point being we need to look at what we have and see the potential in it to do what is needed. Blaming other people for our problems is futile.

GOOD MORNING. This is the first Sunday in Advent. In the secular culture it means a lot of profit in the sales departments of stores across the land. Many people run to get their favorite bargain and some will literally fight to get there first. In the midst of all this behavior others will quietly gather in places of worship or sit quietly at home and ponder the stories that tell us of God's unfailing love for each person and all humanity. We are reminded that Holy Spirit is with us, embracing, encouraging, renewing, inspiring, forgiving, calling, confronting, calming, balancing us, and we need not fight to get ahead of one another because in Providence there is enough for everyone. In Advent we can share in delivering Eternal Love to whomsoever we meet along the way…….

What I Really Know About … GRANDMOTHER’S COOKING
Ancestral food – that’s what we name those special dishes that evoke fond childhood memories of times past. “Gran-gran” lived a simple life in a simple home in southern Georgia. When we traveled from “far away” in northern Georgia to visit her, there were always two certainties that greeted us, no matter what time of day or night we arrived. One was her wide-armed hug which enveloped grandchildren she saw far too seldom. The other was a collection of dishes prepared no doubt with love and anticipation of our arrival.
A meager budget required her to plan weeks in advance to feed the crowd. But feeding the children and grandchildren with her special dishes was one of her ways of showing love. The pie safe (hand built by my grandfather) held apple crisp, along with a white enamel bowl covering a pound cake made by hand from scratch (there was no modern mixer). On the stove were white rice and field peas – a well known staple in that region of the country. In the oven simmered an aromatic pot roast and onions baked for hours to fork-tender perfection. A unique version of macaroni and cheese rounded out the feast that we savored at whatever hour we arrived.
Gran-gran passed away in 1975, but the memories and recipes of those ancestral foods lives on. When we gather as an extended family, these dishes are always served at least once. Now the great grandchildren ask for and love to cook some of the same foods.
The pie safe that held the sweets now holds a place of honor in my brother’s kitchen. The white enamel bowl is no longer used as a cake cover, but is a treasured piece of my kitchen décor. I’m not sure where the rice pot and roast pot are, but I bet they are in my dad’s collection of special treasures.
The recipes, which by today’s standards would not be deemed healthy, live on. We may not eat those ancestral foods often as we strive for healthy living – but we do enjoy them still. What does remain is a healthy memory of Gran-gran and the love she showered on us all with her special cooking.

I learned a lot from him after the fact, but missed really getting to know him

I think of one man in particular in a small church who was church treasurer but never would tell us how much money we had. I tried to force him and got no where. In retrospect I suspect the people gave so little he had to make up the difference, because he always kept the bills paid. Any way, I learned a lot from him after the fact, but missed really getting to know him. It was my ignorance at the time that kept the door closed …...

God is Love
"The book of Ecclesiastes contains the thoughts of 'the Philosopher,' a man who reflected deeply on how short and contradictory human life is, with its mysterious injustices and frustrations, and concluded that 'life is useless.' He could not understand the ways of God, who controls human destiny. Yet, in spite of this, he advised people to work hard, and to enjoy the gifts of God as much and as long as they could. ---- Many of the Philosopher's thoughts appear negative and even depressing. But the fact that this book is in the Bible shows that biblical faith is broad enough to take into account such pessimism and doubt. Many have taken comfort in seeing themselves in the mirror of Ecclesiastes, and have discovered that the same Bible which reflects these thoughts also offers the hope in God that gives life its greater meaning." (TEV) -- the Bibles power, endurance and survival is in part because in it we find a honest account of humanity in the most depraved and the most glorious experiences. We are mean, selfish, barbaric, yet by the Grace of God we become gentle, kind, compassionate, merciful, forgiving, redemptive and any other characteristic of God in whose image/nature we are meant to be. FINALLY, GOD IS LOVE AND HAS SHOWN THAT LOVE IN A UNIQUE WAY IN THE LIFE AND PERSON OF JESUS CHRIST. And beyond that we manifest the Love of God when we embody His Love.

life is a special gift whether it is just moments or many years. if it is many years then part of the experience is some pain, sadness, illness, sufferings old age, etc. in this case one learns to be grateful and count the blessings for they out weigh the bad stuff. in our case i am blessed with good health and grandmother suffers a good bit. this is a daily challenge for her and me. we work at it together. we are a blessing to one another and it is worth the roughness. our children and grandchildren are daily enrichment and blessing...."bless the Lord on my soul and all that is within me bless his Holy name." remember, your life is a light. let it be a light of truth and kindness and gentleness wherever you are.....

Firefighters were near by in a night training exercise and heard their cry for help and rescued these young men. Was this coincidence or Providential? She died yesterday morning with her children and grandchildren gathered around her. She has been one of that crowd of witnesses on earth. Now she is one of the cloud of witnesses in heaven. I go today to participate in her funeral celebration at Bold Spring church. She has been a loving and faithful friend. When I retired in 2000 she was there. This morning I am aware of the cloud of witnesses who cheer and encourage us along the way each day. In a since they walk with us. In the days soon after Marion died Drew said he felt Marion's presence and it was peaceful. This may be a mystery to us, but in God's knowing it is not a mystery. As we walk our road of life today, I am grateful for Elvie, Marion and all others still on earth who are with us to encourage and keep us from being alone. We are all witnesses as we travel in faith and trust.

"...WE KNOW YOU ARE A TEACHER...COME FROM GOD." (John 3: 2) --"THE TEACHER IS HERE AND IS CALLING YOU." (John 11:28) --TEACH:coach, educate, enlighten, explain, guide, explain, nurture, train---he taught educational psychology at the University of Georgia. I remember listening to him and delighting in his words for they were like a light coming on in my mind. -- I was in the 7th grade. Miss West called me to stop by her desk at the end of the class. As I stood there she looked into my eyes and said, "you can be better than that.." I don't remember what I had said or done in class but obviously i had misbehaved. What i do remember is her telling me she cared about me and expected better from me..--RESPECT, HONOR, BLESS THE TEACHER. SHE/HE IS THERE TO TURN ON THE LIGHT IN YOUR MIND AND POINT YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION...

MANY PEOPLE OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH ARE REMEMBERING THE JOURNEY OF CHRIST TOWARD THE CROSS AND THE VICTORY OF LIFE OVER DEATH. IN BOTH THESE HERITAGES WE ARE ASSURED OF GOD'S LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS IN OUR LIVES AND IN THE WORLD. (words of another life traveler) --- as long as we draw breath in this world we will be in the process of personal creation. The job is not yet completed and it is in my mind that our creation will be completed in heaven. In the meantime we travel ever facing into what is yet to come and yet to be done.....
