"You don't need to be rich to have a rich life." (Rachael Ray, her mother taught her this saying) ---sometimes persons who do become materially rich testify to the fact that this kind of wealth does not enrich the heart. I remember being on a panel of pastors discussing various aspect of ministry. Someone asked a question that I responded to and talked about quality ministry not being dependent upon "climbing the ladder". One of the ministers in the audience said I could say that when I was in one of the "larger" churches. I have remembered that. I understand how he felt, but I also know it is all relative. He would not have understood if I told him some of my greatest moments had been those in small churches sitting around the table visiting and sharing the stories of a family.  ambition and working to excel are important factors in succeeding in life—as long as we remember that these are not the whole of life value and meaning.

"you can do better than that…" is all she said as I stood at her desk following the class dismissal. She was my 7^th grade teacher. She did not embarrass me. She did not fuss at me. Because she cared enough to let me know that whatever had been my behavior I could do better, I am still trying to do better. "Miss Norma" was one of those persons in my life who gave me a glimpse of God's way of teaching me and calling me to a higher standard.

One of the concepts of our religious/spiritual heritage is STEWARDSHIP. We are taught that God has placed us on this earth to use its resources for our daily living; however, we are stewards. All belongs to the Creator and sustainer of life. We are not to be wasteful, careless, greedy or abusive. We are to treat nature respectfully. The current "oil spill" does not indicate a sense of being stewards of God's creation. And the big question is, am I practicing good stewardship in what I do with nature's provision?

"The Paty Sunday School Class 1993—A historical report of a spiritual journey" –this was a ladies  Sunday School Class at Decatur First United Methodist Church during the years I served as pastor. Each year they published a report of their spiritual journey. It included thoughts and quotes from members of the class. These were faith statements that were important and meaningful to the various members as they lived their life journey. One of those thoughts to ponder was, "God always answers our prayer. Either he changes the circumstances, or he supplies sufficient power to overcome them." Most of the members of this class are dead, but these truths are left behind to offer some point of light for others coming along the way.
