He was a young fellow not much older than me fighting in Korea. I never really knew him but he grew up in the same town as me. –Arthur was Lillian and Jacks only child fighting in Vietnam. He was a career soldier just like his  dad. Both young men years apart in age died in battle. We remember them and thousands of others whose lives were cut short fighting for  the cause of country and the freedoms we enjoy. Freedom is expensive-- live in it carefully, respectfully, and gratefully.

"…..had learned to accept each other and honor each other's gifts." ---- a fundamental requirement for any relationship in family, business, life. And our various capacities and abilities to make a difference certainly comes as a gift and we honor the Giver when we accept and honor each other's gifts.

The landscape of history is littered with people who have tried, failed, fallen-but history is written by those who refused to stay down, got up and kept going ……

After all these years the idea of God is still a mystery; yet there is a awareness in me that lets me know when I am on track with the mystery/God. And when I am on track  I know a peace and happiness that is all consuming. Trouble is I tend to get off track too often, but the Mystery is like a soft voice calling me back.

stories

“…..the shortest distance between a human being and the Truth is a story.” …….”Do not despise the story. A lost gold coin is found by means of a penny candle; the deepest truth is found by means of a simple story.”  ----- two prayers of spoken: one is telling God all the  good things he/she has done. The other is saying to God that he/she has really goofed and is sorry. Which one really gets God’s attention?....which one is teachable?

Missing Pearl

He presented her a family heirloom that had a missing pearl…he wanted to have it repaired…she said, “I’d rather leave it as it is. It’s like the human condition—precious, yet flawed. And priceless, even in its incompleteness.” – I think this is how God looks upon us and would have us look upon one another- then we can really deal with the issues of life.

Choose Wisely

I was looking out my window at the parking lot across the street. Something strange was happening. A young guy knelt down looking under a car, then he stood and quickly used his tool to  break into the car, get it started and backed out. I realized he was steeling this vehicle. One of the secretaries in the office called the police. The result was a short chase and he was caught. He used his abilities to break and enter. He could have used his abilities to do a honest and honorable job. Misappropriated effort. Trying to get something for nothing……chose wisely….

blind from birth

He was blind from birth. Growing up was a real challenge. His dad would say to him: “Look inside, …Search deep within yourself, and find that place where God can talk to you. He’s always ready to help. All you need to do is practice listening, and trust what you hear.” ---years later his now grown man would say: “The one thing I know for certain is that my dad was right. Even when things are at their darkest, God is there, guiding us.” (Guidepost) ---yep, I think this way too…..

truth

“ERROR OF OPINION MAY BE TOLERATED WHERE REASON IS LEFT FREE TO COMBAT IT.” (Thomas Jefferson) –our knowledge on any subject is incomplete; therefore, we must be open to correction in error or to adding knowledge to enhance our understanding. “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”

Memories

SHE WOULD COME BOUNCING UP THE STEPS TO GREET MOTHER AND DADDY. IT WAS HER SATURDAY MORNING RITUAL TO TAKE DADDY TO THE GROCERY STORE. SHE WORKED IN THE STORE AND ALWAYS GREETED CUSTOMERS WITH WARMTH AND KINDNESS. ELIZABETH BRAGG LIGHTS THE PATH OF MY MEMORY AS I THINK OF PEOPLE ALONG THE WAY WHOSE LIFE SHOWED  ME HOW TO LIVE.

soul

“…KEEP PEACE IN YOUR SOUL.” …… IT COMES TO ME THAT THE SOUL IS THE WELLSPRING OF LIFE, TRUTH, GOODNESS IN US. IF THIS SOURCE IS POLLUTED WITH UNHEALTHY JUNK AND MEANESS ALL ELSE IS DAMAGED. PRAYER,MEDITATION,QUIETNESS, TUNING IN TO THE ETERNITY WITHIN CLEARS THE FLOW FROM OUR SOUL AND BLESSES THE MOMENT. “AND THE PEACE OF GOD KEEP YOUR MIND AND HEART……”

Knot of Faith

When you get tired and discouraged and the suffering seems unbearable and you want to give up-what then?- tie a knot of faith in your rope and hang on……whether you are young, middle age, old, in bad economy….life transition…..hang on….

Words.... Actions

Sometimes words are action-sometimes words are indication of intent followed by the act. Either way if the word and the act flow from a heart inspired by eternal love and compassion the result will bless and not curse. Therefore, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in thy sight O Lord, my strength and redeemer.”

Gran Gran

Her “pound” cakes were so good. I remember she baked one and I carried it for her to a older couple who lived in a store front building between a grocery store and a feed store in our small  south Georgia town. These two old people were appreciative. This homemade cake was a way God had given my mother to express His love.  actually, I think each person is intended to be a way God expresses His love in the world now…..my mother’s example encourages me…..

Trust God

As I  sit here this morning asking myself what is the word/thought for today, my mind is drawn to the sacred truths that have shown me the way through so many years. This is one that I share now:

“Trust God from the bottom of your hearts; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. ---Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track.” (Proverbs 5,6)

Love you,

MOTHER‚S DAY-pause, remember, say a prayer, give thanks for mothers
present and mothers gone-but mothers remain always in our minds, hearts,
memories. Thanks be to God for the gift of mothers.

Imagination

“…without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever would approach him must believe that he exists and the he rewards those who seek him.” – when I read this it occurred to me that faith and believing that God exists requires imagination. The ability to see what is not physically visible. Maybe this is one reason children have no problem imagining God. After all the visible of life is but the tip of the icebergs of reality, of life….

Gifts

“Let me put this question  to you,” said the teacher. “What do you have that you have not received?”  Gratitude responds to this question with, “thank you.”      Greed responds with, “more.” ---- greed is never satisfied, gratitude is always fulfilled.

Brooding Spirit

I envision the Brooding Spirit paying attention to the chaos in me, in you, in the world and patiently and timely saying, “let us create…. a beautiful and meaningful relationship here, let us raise up this person to do good and love instead of hate…..”   I pay attention to what God is bringing forth in me…I invite you to do so too….

claimed

“Don’t be afraid, I’ve redeemed you. I’ve called your name. You’re mine.” (Isaiah) ---when I read these words this morning it struck me how important it is to be claimed. A child lost in the crowd wants his/her mother/dad to find him. A person facing the decisions of life needs a inner sense of Some One  who knows her name and cares and says you are mine and I am with you. THEN YOU DON’T NEED TO BE AFRAID-YOU ARE FOUND-YOU ARE CLAIMED-ETERNAL LOVE IS WITH YOU.

Go with God this day,

Dad/Papa
