the Plumb Line……

"Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel;.." (Amos 7:8) - When my dad was a carpenter he used a plumb line to be sure the wall was straight. A crooked wall would eventually result in a unstable or poorly constructed building. So is it with a persons life or a community. Foolish decisions, unhealthy relationships, values that lack the core truths of God result in unstable and poorly designed lives. But God in Christ has come to reconcile, to make straight and balanced the life that is off course and messed up. You may have to suffer some pain when choosing to do what is right but in the long run the dividends are indestructible. When making decisions check your thinking with the Plumb Line……

Love your Neighbor

> "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind……Love your neighbor as yourself..". When asked what is most important above all else to God, Jesus said the love of God and the love of neighbor. I was reminded in my thoughts that humans are hardwired to please God above all else and the first step in pleasing God is to look to the good of others. It is no accident that persons of great wealth often set up humanitarian endowments that provide programs for improving the welfare of others and/or the environment. It is no accident that in times of crisis persons reach out in compassion to help. It is not really satisfying to get what we want and have our way at the expense of other people. We feel better about ourselves when we share and show kindness to another person and this does not require great wealth. Today we will do what we can to make life better for someone….

Love is completely God' nature in us and in all creation. We argue and fight one another and Love brings us together in peace, reconciliation and forgiveness. "FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE, BUT THE GREATEST OF THESE IS LOVE." LOVE TRUMPS EVERYTHING ELSE EVERY TIME.

I SAT LAST NIGHT WATCHING A CONGREGATION SINGING OLD TIME HYMNS. MY MIND WAS CARRIED BACK TO ONE OF MY CHURCHES I SERVED IN SOUTH GA. I COULD HEAR THE PEOPLE SINGING "THE OLD RUGGED CROSS", "HE LIVES. I KNOW HE LIVES, HE LIVES IN MY HEART." "BLESSED ASSURANCE". IT FELT GOOD, PEACEFUL AND BLESSED AS I LISTENED AND LET MYSELF REVISIT THE PAST. YET, ANOTHER PART OF THIS EXPERIENCE WAS OBSERVING THE FACES OF THE SINGERS. EVERY FACE DIFFERENT. EVERY FACE REVEALED SOMETHING ABOUT THE PERSON. THE CALMNESS, THE SMILE, THE PASSION. I THOUGHT TO MYSELF THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF A PERSON IS HIS.HER FACE. THE FACE EXPRESSED THE JOY AND GLADNESS EXPRESSED IN SINGING THESE WONDERFUL HYMNS OF FAITH.

When a person lives sensitive to God's presence he/she need never be bored for that presence will surprise you in unexpected times and places. I went into Burger King to buy one of their specials. They young man greeted me, took my coupons and punched in my order. Just as he concluded the transaction he asked what kind of day was having. I told him and then I asked about his day. As i looked at him I said, "I like your outfit." His shirt and cap looked neat. I saw his eyes light up and a smile cross his face. After my order was completed and I turned to leave he called my name and said "bye". I left feeling better than when I went in because of my brief moment of friendship with him. —a Spirit surprise—
