"....but the fact remains that all loyalties must give place to loyalty to God." (Matt. 10:34-39 / William Barclay Commentary) -- strange as it may seem, a person cannot really be true to family and other duties until one is true to God. It is a matter of priorities and ultimate values. I do not hear Jesus in this text splitting up families. I hear him saying that our ability to really love and care for family must be grounded in our responsibility to God and his will. Jesus knelt in the Garden and prayed that God would not require him to endure the cross, but his final words of prayer were that no matter what he wanted God's will be done. And God can only do Good. Truth and love and care for one another can only be done well when grounded in the ultimate Good who is God. God is love...  dad/papa
